Dreadlock Frequently Asked Questions

Natural dreadlocks

- How are dreadlocks made?

We use a backcombing and crocheting technique.  After dreads are made it is good to keep palm rolling them to keep them grow straight and regular maintenance is advised to keep them from joining together, get fuzzy, make them strong on the roots and to get rid of lumps and bumps.

- How long does my hair need to be to get dreadlocks?

Your hair needs to be at least 10 cm long for them to stay and for extensions to hold

- Should I use wax in my dreadlocks?

NO!  We don't use any products when creating dreadlocks, as this will get stuck in the dread and this might lead to dread-rot after a long time of being stuck in it. We do recommend products for after care like natural shampoo, deep-clean products, nourishing oil blends and apple cider vinegar hair rinse.

- How long does it take to get dreadlocks done?

It depends on he length and thickness of your hair and how many you wish to get.  It can vary between 4 to 10 hours.  A single dread can take between 10 and 30 minutes to make.

- How do I maintain my dreadlocks and how often?

It depends on how 'tidy'  you want your dreads to look, but it is recommended to come every 2 to 3 months to keep your roots strong and prevent any lumps and bumps. Sometimes it is still ok after 6 months but any time after it will be a long maintenance session and dreads might be damaged from hair that shed before being put back into the roots of your dreadlock.

- What happens with the maintenance?

We work in the loose and new hair growth back into the dread to strengthen them from the roots. if this is not done for a long time the dreads get weak and over time they can break. We then work our way down the dread to straighten out bumps and lumps. Read more here.

- Can I wash my dreadlocks?

YES!  Of course.
We advise to wash your dreads once or twice a week with a natural
shampoo that does not leave any residue. If you have the feeling your dreads are getting sticky we advice to go for a deep-clean treatment either at your home or in the salon. See shop for products

- How do I wash dreadlocks?

With this you have to find a way that works for you.  Some people use shampoo bars others liquid shampoo.
While you are having a shower first rinse your hair, then put shampoo on your hand and divide it on your scalp. Massage your scalp and then rinse.  Do this again and put more soap on the rest of the dreads and squeeze them until you feel that all the dreads have shampoo in them.  Then while squeezing you rinse them until all the shampoo is gone.

- How do I dry my dreadlocks?

We recommend to wash your dreads in the morning so they have all day to dry.  After washing you dreads squeeze the water out as much as possible, then wrap them into a towel and leave them for about half an hour.  Then just leave them dry naturally or use one of our drying bonnets to get the last bit of water out.  Don't tie hem up when damp as they wont be able to dry properly and might start to get smelly.

- Can I use a hairdryer to dry my dreadlocks?

Yes you can. Just make sure not to use very hot air to close or to long on your skin and hair, this can really dry out your hair and can cause breakage.

- Do I have to cut my hair if I don't want dreadlocks anymore?

This is the easiest option but NO you don't have to cut your hair.  You can comb them out with a metal comb (or a fork) and use some oil (olive or sunflower).  There will be a lot of hair coming out, this is mostly what you have shed.  The hair that is left is usually in very good condition, it might just need a little trim and styling after. We offer this service in the salon also.

- Can I get dreadlock-rot easily?

No, this only happens if you have used any wax, conditioner or to much oil over a long time (6 months +) and have not washed it out properly.  This works as a sticky substance inside the dread that gathers dust and together they can rot. make sure to be op top of this and go for deep-cleans every 4 to 6 weeks.

- Can I dye or bleach my dreadlocks?

Yes you can but; dying hair a lot of times is not good for your hair (and the environment), your scalp and your dreads might get brittle and get damaged (especially if you bleach them more then once).  If you do dye your dreads then make sure you wash out any product used. Always best to find a professional to help you.

- How much does it cost to get dreadlocks done?

The cost vary, depending on what you like to get. Single creations are €12 each. A half head of dreadlocks costs from €250. And a full head of dreadlocks costs from €350. Prices are made up individually after a consultation to make sure we are on the same page. If you want extensions added, this cost extra. For full price structure see here.

- What products should I use on my dreadlocks?

When it comes to products i always recommend; Less Is More. No wax, No gell. Shampoo should be a natural brand that does not leave any residue. Mookley Shampoo bars that have a good lather and smell delicious. Another good brand is Dr. Bronners. To prevent dry scalp Mookley Organic Nourishing Oil Blends are a great option to keep your scalp healthy. For dreadlocks that are mature we recommend a deep clean every 4 to 6 months. Mookley Organic Apple Cider Vinegar can really help with this. These vinegars are softer on the scalp and hair then others and have essential oils added to them to help with the pungent smell off the vinegar.

- Can I add extensions to my dreadlocks?

Yes you certainly can! We use high quality human hair extensions to extend dreadlocks. We use a weave as you go technique, instead of pre-make extensions, to ensure long lasting extensions.

- How long until dreadlocks mature?

Dreadlocks take about 6 months to fully mature. Meaning, that they have taken on the shape that they will be and won’t change anymore. You can really help them along by palm rolling them after every wash for the first 4 to 6 months. After this it is important to focus on healthy roots. So regular maintenance is important. (every 2 to 3 months)

- What is the best technique to get good dreadlocks?

There is many ways to start of dreadlocks, like twist and rip, braids, back combing and rolling. BUT we believe by far the best technique to make dreadlocks is back combing and crochetting. This creates an instant dreadlock that compare to other techniques matures faster and creates a neat tight dreadlock from day one

- Does it hurt to get dreadlocks?

This really depends on pain tolerance and if you are used to brushing hair.  People who are used to it aren't feeling to much but if you are not used to brushing your hair, it can be a bit stingy as your hair is being pulled.  When making them the first time it might only be sensitive when working on the roots, as we work down to the bottom of the dread you wont feel a thing.  With the maintenance sessions it is a similar feeling but it will take a lot less long then the first creation.

Wool dreadlocks

- What are temporary dreadlock extensions?

Temporary dreadlocks are handmade dreadlock extensions that can be braided into your natural hair to give the look and feel of real dreadlocks — without the permanent commitment. They can also be added to natural dreadlocks for extra volume or a pop of colour.

- Do temporary dreadlocks damage your hair?

No — when installed correctly and not worn for too long, they are perfectly safe. I braid them gently and use secure but non-damaging techniques to protect your natural hair.

- What’s the difference between single-ended and double-ended dreadlocks?

  • Single-ended (SE) dreads have one loop at the top and are braided into a single section of your hair.

  • Double-ended (DE) dreads have two strands joined in the middle, so they wrap around your hair for double thickness.

Both create a full, beautiful style — I can help you choose which suits your hair best.

- Can I reuse temporary dreadlocks?

Absolutely. With proper care and storage, you can reuse your wool dreadlocks many times. Simply remove them carefully, wash and air-dry, then store in a breathable bag until next time.

- Can I swim or shower with temporary dreadlocks?

You can, but it’s best to keep them dry when possible. Chlorine or salt water can cause wool to felt more tightly, changing the texture. If they get wet, squeeze out excess water and let them dry completely.

- Do temporary dreadlocks look natural?

They can do. Especially if you choose a colour thats close to your natural hair colour an we go for a realistic amount between 30 and 50 dreadlocks.

- How do I remove temporary dreadlocks?

Simply unbraid each section gently from your natural hair. They should come out easily after no longer then 6 weeks. there will be some loose hair that you need to comb out. It might look like a lot but don’t worry, this is the amount that you naturally shed in this period. If you’d like help with safe removal, I can guide you or do it in the salon.

- Can I sleep with temporary dreadlocks?

Yes. You can just tie them up in a loose bun or braid. You can also cover with a silk or satin scarf. This keeps them tidy and prevents friction while you sleep.

At least 5 cm.

If you are used to short hair you might need to adjust to the extra weight.  They are the lightest dread extension compare to human hair or synthetic.  While washing they soak up quite some water but when they are dry they are light and soft again.

- How long can I wear temporary dreadlocks for?

Advised is up to 6 weeks.  After that they look very loose and the hair underneath might start to dread.

After taking them out to be re-plaited you can give the dreads a bath (with warm water, NOT HOT) with natural shampoo or soap.

- Will wool dreadlocks shrink when washed?

In the start they might shrink a little bit.  It is always good to hand roll the dreads to straighten and stretch them out to keep them tidy and they will last longer.

- How do I dry wool dreadlocks?

With wool dreads it is best, like with permanent dreads, to wash them in the morning so they have all day to dry. Just after a shower you can squeeze them out like a sponge to get most water out.  They dry much quicker then natural permanent dreads.
